BankInvest has launched a new Emerging Market Debt Fund containing sovereign and corporate bonds. As an SRI advisor to the Fund, Ethix has developed a methodology for evaluating sovereign bonds, which draws on Ethix' expertise in Norms-Based Screening.
Ethix evaluates the international commitments and the practices of emerging market countries within five norm areas: human rights, international humanitarian law, labour rights, environmental impact and anti-corruption. In a two-stage assessment process, Ethix evaluates each country’s commitment to internationally recognised legal instruments within each norm area. Secondly, Ethix evaluates each country’s practices in meeting its international commitments based on information on violations and poor practices compiled by authoritative sources within each norm area.
The Fund’s corporate bonds are screened and scored according to the same concept as BankInvest’s award-winning Global Emerging Markets Fund, conducted by Ethix in collaboration with its partner Innovest. Companies with unaddressed breaches of international norms, and companies within controversial sectors such as the Arms and Tobacco industry, are screened out. Furthermore, all companies are positively scored according to their ESG-level and trend, and key issues are brought up in dialogue with all the companies.
