Responsible investment and corporate responsibility have developed rapidly. Assets under responsible investment management in Europe are estimated to amount to some 5 trillion Euro. Despite a strong growth over the past years though, responsible investment is nothing like a homogenous field and is today characterized by a significant degree of diversity in terms of strategies used, specific environmental and social issues taken into consideration and set environmental and social goals.
For a long time investors in general have paid relatively little attention to corporate responsibility. This has changed dramatically. With more than 700 investment institutions having signed the UN-backed Principles for Responsible Investment, it can be argued that responsible investment has now become mainstream investment practice.
