REPORT: A new report supported by Ethix SRI Advisors reveals the potential business risks facing the extractive sector

Submitted by Gisela Riddarström on 24 October 2011

A new report supported by Ethix SRI Advisors, titled Tread lightly: Biodiversity and ecosystem services risk and opportunity management within the extractive industry, reveals the potential business risks facing the extractive sector from their reliance and impact on natural resources. The study has been conducted by the Natural Value Initiative*. Some 30 oil, gas and mining companies with a total market cap of Euro 1,900 billion were investigated. Many of them were working to assess biodiversity and ecosystem services risks and opportunities, however, none were yet managing the issues comprehensively, despite running reputational, operational and financial risks.

The report is available here.

*A collaboration between Fauna & Flora International, the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative, Nyenrode Business University and the Dutch Association of Investors for Sustainable Development.
